“Birding with Isaias and Tours Atitlan!”

My wife and I recently stayed at Lake Atitilan with the intentions of doing some birding and hiking. We had heard good things about Pedro, TAA’s owner, and we attempted to book him on short notice to go birding. Unfortunately, he was not available, but he hooked us up with his younger brother, Isaias, and that turned out to be fantastic. Having had a few bad experiences during our short stay in Guatemala already, we decided to only book one day to begin with.

On our first day, Isaias picked us up from our resort on the lake and then we met the driver at the docks and headed to the birding spot. The destination was a private piece of property less than two hours away associated with a popular local restaurant, Restaurante Rincón Suizo. We arrived early, had a good breakfast and then hit the trail. The chief objective was to see the Pink-headed Warbler, and Isaias didn’t disappoint. We saw in excess of 25 species of birds, including many varieties of warblers, including the beautiful Pink-headed fellow. We had good binoculars, but Isaias also brought a good sighting scope on a tripod for better viewing. Isaias has recently attended a training seminar in Guatemala hosted by the Audubon Society, and he really knew the local species and was very good at identifying the differences in birds even at a distance. All in all, it was a very pleasant day and we concluded it with a late lunch and plans to do another trip.

Since we were so pleased with Isaias, we contacted Pedro and asked if we could schedule another trip with him the following day. The second day, we went to Reserva Natural Privada Los Tarrales and the birding was nothing short of spectacular. While there, we were joined by a guide from Los Tarrales, Josue, who was a friend of Isaias’ and also a recent graduate from the program hosted by the Audubon Society. We had a great time! It was very relaxed – both young men are very knowledgeable and both have a great sense of humor. We saw 55 species of birds, including my favorite bird of the entire trip – the Mottled Owl. Los Tarrales was really wonderful, and if you are in the region and appreciate birds, you should definitely book a trip through Pedro.

After spending two days with Isaias and dealing with Pedro, I highly recommend giving them a call if you want to do any eco-based activities. They do much more than just birding and they are very professional and a pleasure to deal with. Isaias was one of the best young guides we have had anywhere – and we are extensive travelers. It is refreshing that he truly appreciates nature and has an infectious energy about the birds of his country. Supporting companies like TAA and people like Pedro, Isaias and Josue is a great way to promote eco-friendly travel and an appreciation for nature in general.

Give them a try, you will not be disappointed!

    “Bird‡ watching‡ around Lake Atitlan”

We had a wonderful experience going bird watching with Isaias around Lake Atitlan. Isaias was knowledgeable, and assured that each person in our group had a chance to see each bird. He took us to a beautiful garden, so in addition to seeing many birds, we also saw amazingly beautiful flowers. His excitement about some of the unique birds we saw enhanced my experience. Isaias took the time at the end of our excursion to help us review the many varieties of birds we had seen. I would recommend him to future visitors.

    “Birdwatching tour”

My bird watching tour with Pedro was a complete delight! As I was in Guatemala during the off season, I was fortunate to have Pedro all to myself. Pedro is a true adventurer; one can tell because it is obvious as you get to know him that he guides because he loves the activities he guides. From the bird watching perspective, Pedro knows his birds. We were lucky enough to come across a new bird Pedro had not seen before – he was thrilled, pulled out his books, took photos, and planned on going back so he could definitely determine what the bird was. While on our tour, he seemed to find birds out of nowhere. He is a natural! He is very knowledgable about the behavior of the birds and eager to share and teach. My camera lens isn’t capable of taking close up photos of the birds, but Pedro has a camera that is and he was kind enough to let me copy the photos at the end of the tour. Additionally, at the end of the tour, he wrote out all of the birds we saw so I would have them for future reference.

Aside from birds, Pedro is knowledgeable about other aspects of Guatemala and Lake Atitlan. We talked a lot about coffee as we stopped to look at coffee plants. I asked about a lot of other plants and trees as well – which he knows. He is extremely pleasant and patient, not just professional, but as at least one other reviewer mentioned, it is like you are out on a stroll with a friend. It was a truly amazing morning. Thank you Pedro!

    Wonderful bird‡ watching‡ experience

We recently stayed in Santa Cruz and thoroughly enjoyed an early morning bird watching hike with Pedro Solis. Only two of the three of us had binoculars, but this was not a problem because Pedro could provide very good binoculars. We saw more than 30 species of birds. Pedro knew where to find them and was an excellent spotter, also very well versed in their calls. His English was perfect but perhaps the very best thing about him and the tour was his enthusiasm! He was just as excited as we were to see the beautiful birds. I would highly recommend this to anyone traveling here. I have also heard excellent things about the other tours this company offers.

    A great family trip!

We visited Guatemala with our two grandchildren, ages 9 and 13. Fortunately we had found Tours Adventure Atitlan, with its outstanding owner, Pedro Juan Solis, to arrange and supervise our tour. With private transportation and quality accommodations from Antigua though the Lake and to Tikal, we were extremely happy with the outcome. All of our local guides were very knowledgeable with a great concern for their Mayan culture and their heritage. Josue at Lost Torrales is an exceptional naturalist guiding us through the flora and the bird-watching as well as the coffee growing and preparation process. David at Tikal made the ancient city come to life for us. Pedro himself guided us through the balance including a stimulating two day visit with his family on the Lake, giving us an unusual opportunity to experience daily family life in Guatemala. Did I say, “The children and grandma reveled on the canopy zip-line!”
All in all it was a great experience, introducing us to a lovely country, its history, heritage, and people, and helping us learn more about our grandchildren and ourselves.

Birding with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide

Isaias Soliz is a lovely guide. I was with a small group of friends who are avid birders and Isaias charmed and wowed us with a bird packed 4 hours. Native species were found, framed for pictures, habitats for the migrating birds too were his specialty. Excellent English speaker, calm manner, good pace. We had a lovely time.

Deserves a #1 rating and my gratitude

Tours Atitlan and Pedro turned my dreams into reality. I went by myself to Lake Atitlan for 5 days hoping to see some hummingbirds and pick up some local art. Before leaving I found TA and Pedro and after a few emails I booked 2 days with him.
The 1st day was for hummingbirds – he arranged all transport (boats and vans) to 2 reserves where we saw and photographed 9 different species of hummingbirds and saw many other kinds of birds in the process. Pedro who is an excellent birder in his own right, arranged for a local park guide with scopes through which I took some great shots with my cameras. We also had a wonderful private luncheon at the reserve with Pedro, the park guide and our driver – I learned so much more from them.
The 2nd day was modern Mayan culture in San Juan – artists, weavers and herbs and Santiago – the largest city on the lake, home of Maximon and wonderfully exciting. Again private boat trips to the locations from the dock at my hotel. It seemed like everyone not only knew but genuinely like Pedro as we safely walked the streets of the cities from the docks. He was extremely knowledgeable and proud of the Mayan history and again followed it up with a great lunch in Santiago where we saw 3 more hummingbirds.
I was so happy with the 2 days that I booked a 3rd day to see the ancient ruins in Iximche – again all was arranged and Pedro had hours of stories to explain what I was looking at and the original history thru the conquest of the site.
My trip was a great success and memorable due to Pedro and his team.

bird watching at santa cruz, atitlan

Pedro is an excellent guide for walks around santa cruz, and no doubt further afield.

He is very knowledgeable, polite, and you immediately know he loves the birds as much as anybody.

For an english amateur birder he was also a very helpful at identification where almost everything is one of a family of four or five, to our paltry one to be seen in the uk.

A Great Adventure and Birding Experience

My wife and I toured the Lake Atitlan area with Pedro of Atitlan Tours. We kayaked, hiked and went birding. Pedro is an excellent guide and was knowledgeable with every aspect of our adventures with him, especially the birding. He was born and raised in the area and knows the territory like the palm of his hand. I can’t say enough of him and his adventure company.
