Wonderful day in Chichicastenango with the best guide: Isaias!

My mom and I spent a full day with Isaias (“Chai”) as he showed us all the ins and out of the Chichicastenango market place. We had just flown in from California the afternoon before and Chai was our first full taste of Guatemalan hospitality. He set the bar so high for the rest of our week long trip together.

From the moment Chai picked us up from our lodging at Villa Sumaya (incredible place), we knew we were in for a treat. Chai wore a huge smile and was clearly energized and prepared for our day. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area, having grown up on the shores of Lake Atitlan himself. He entertained our many questions and even had the upmost patience as my mom and I kept extending our shopping time. Chi chi is a mecca of Guatemalan handicrafts and can feel like sensory overload. I recommend taking your time inhaling the sights and sounds.

He gave us an insider’s perspective too of Guatemalan traditions at the nearby cemetery, showed us best cheese and tortilla pairing, and was happy to pose for pictures.

We recommend highly Chai and his brother’s company. We felt we were afforded an authentic experience with a most profession, personal and safe company.

    Thank you!

My mom, sister and I were visiting Lake Atitlan for a birthday celebration. We knew the trip was going to be fun, but it exceeded our expectations.

On Sunday, Isaias took the three of us to the market in Chichicastenango. On Monday, Pedro took us kayaking on Lake Atitlan, then we took a boat ride over to tour the city of San Juan. We wanted to relax and had only planned two tour days, but we had so much fun that we asked if we could arrange another tour at the end of day two. Pedro quickly made plans to accommodate.

We went to Chichicastenango market, one of the most famous markets in Guatemala. We we stayed near the market in an old hotel just near the main square as the stalls were being set up for the next morning. We visited the beautiful old church whose steps became a huge flower market the next morning. Off to the side was a stall selling all the pieces one needs to make or repair weaving looms. The next day we spent wandering all the little lanes in the main square and those that spilled out through the village streets. Everywhere we admired the amazing textiles, some local and many from other villages. We were beginning to learn what villages the different patterns were from. The huipils ( traditional women’s tops) from Chichi all had an embroidered sunburst around the head opening. It is beyond impossible to describe all the colors and patterns hanging in the many stalls. It made me feel a little like I was looking through an expensive kaleidoscope. There were all the parts that make up the local women’s costumes and many tourist items made from used tops or other hand-loomed fabrics that became pillow covers jacket fronts, wall hangings, scarves, purses, back packs, table runners, quilts and many other creative items. I could have stayed there for hours just taking in the awesome delight of all the colors, costumes, people and healthy looking produce of all kinds.

I´ve always had de desire to visit Chichicastenango, and during this visit to Guatemala I had the goal to visit the largest open market in the Americas. Not wanting to drive to Chichi on my own, I started to look up for tours in the Internet and after a thorough search. I found Tours Atitlan. It was a good decision to choose this company. The staff was very courteous, professional and prompt on their arrival to pick us up. Isaias, our tour guide, was so professional, knowledgeable, and attentive.
