El Pico de Cielo hike is among one of the best in Lake Atitlan. The trail is very ancient, and very off the beaten track hike. The hike starts from Santa Cruz La Laguna and it last 2.5hrs up and 1.5hrs down. The first 1hr. hike is challenging and then follows the ridgeline for most of the way until you reach the summit.

At the Summit of El Pico de Cielo:

Once you reach the summit, you will enjoy rewarding views of the Lake Atitlan, volcanoes Atitlan, San Pedro and Toliman. In the very back of the mountains you will see one of the most active volcanoes of Guatemala, volcan de fuego and as well as volcan Acatenango.

After a nice packed lunch, we then start descending the Pico de Cielo mountain and end at your hotel by noon time (12:00 – 12:30pm)

Note: On the way back you will have the option to return by pick-up truck (additional charges will apply)

For your Pico de Cielo Hike – there are a few ways to do it –

1. By car 40 minutes and hike 30 minutes to the summit – Recommended for families

2. Do the most challenging hike from Santa Cruz la Laguna to the summit – For advance hikes

3. You can book this adventure hike for sunrise or sunset from Panajachel or Santa Cruz – We use transport to get on time to see sunrise or sunset.

Wonderful Adventures – Knowledgaable and Friendly Guides!

I organized three tours with Tours Atitlan this past month and each one was wonderful. The first was a hike to Pico de Cielo for the yoga group I took to Villa Sumaya. Isaias and Domingo were awesome. They were joyful, spoke perfect English, were knowledgeable on many of the plants and animals along the way, took us into the home and kitchen of a local Mayan family. I then organized two tours for my family (wife and two children – 13 & 10) with Isaias: horseback riding around San Pedro volcano and ziplining at the Panajachel Reserve. He is a lot of fun to be around, sincerely wants you to have an amazing time, and went out of his way to help us with transportation back to Antigua and then on to Tikal. Highly recommended! When I go back, I will definitely use their excellent services again!

    “Hike to Pico de Cielo”

Our hike with Pedro to Pico de Cielo was one of the highlights of our trip to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. We had the opportunity to experience traveling through Guatemala as the locals do, and we met local Maya families as they were working together harvesting food and preparing it for market. The beauty of the countryside, the laughter of the Maya people, and the views of Lake Atitlan from Pico de Cielo have stayed with me to this day, along with stories told by Pedro about the Maya people. This adventure really is a gem, as is Pedro.

    “Fantastic tour and tour guide!”

A group of 7 of us booked a tour “El Pico de Cielo” with Adventure Atitlan. Pedro was a fantastic guide and the tour was everything it was promised to be and so much more. The hike and the fantastic views from the “Pico” were amazing, but the best part was Pedro’s knowledge of the area, the history and the culture. We received so much more than we anticipated and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the day. Pedro went out of his way to be sure we were all comfortable and happy.

I highly recommend this tour and this tour agency!!

    You must take this hike!

I went on the hike of Pico de Cielo with Pedro and Isarias a few weeks ago and it will be an experience I will never forget! While the hike up the volcano was vigorous and challenging, it was made all the better with the help and guidance of these two men. Each were very knowledgable about the history, culture, and vegetation of the area around Lake Atitlan which helped to enhance the experience. I loved this tour and I can’t wait to go back to do it again!

“Excellent guiding from a young ecotourism student”

I hiked to Pico de Cielo with Isais, the brother of Pedro, who owns Tours Atitlan. He was an excellent guide, teaching me about many plants along the way. He went slowly (more slowly than I needed) and kept close track of me (I was the only guest on the hike), making sure that I was fine. I learned a lot from him, and would recommend him to others.

    “Great views, do it early”

We booked the tour via the language school in Santa Cruz, their office is 50 m on the left side when you arrive via boat.
Our guide Edgar picked us up at 5am (yes, we wanted to go that early), and we were off. He speaks English and Spanish and told us a lot about local culture and flowers we passed on the way up. It took us 2,5hours to go to the top. We saw an amazing sunrise halfway. Luckily you have nice views of the lake and volcanoes all the way to the top. The hike was steep but well worth it. You could see all 3 volcanoes without the clouds. We were back at 9:30am, just when it got hot.
I highly recommend this walk. It’s worth going early but you will need a head lamp. And take a guide.

Outstanding, intimate tour/visit to Pico del Cielo!

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Lake Atitlán. The absolute highlight of our trip was our half day trip to Pico del Cielo. Our guide, Juan Carlos was extremely warm and knowledgeable. He made us feel incredibly comfortable and had great answers to all of our questions. He is knowledgeable about history, culture, and the natural world in his region. Aside from that, the setting of the tour was absolutely gorgeous and led
us through towns off the beaten path all the way to Pico del Cielo and its incomparable view of Lake Atitlán and surrounding volcanoes. I highly recommend Juan Carlos/this tour company (family owned)!!!!
